The Allman Brothers Band at The Beacon, March 14, 2009
Posted: Mar 14, 2009I was still trying to get past last night’s show with Southside Johnny’s horn section and Boz Scaggs as I took my seat for the Saturday spectacle.
I really can’t say enough how downright cool it is they are paying tribute to band founding father Duane with the opening and closing slide shows, and tonight they opened with the pictures again, this time with Warren and Derek playing a flawless version of “Little Martha.” I love that song. Nobody could ever outdo Duane, but the boys sure sounded good. And by the way, have y’all every heard the Jerry Douglas version? Killer.
Next came Gregg, in full Southern drawl, singin’ like a wild man on “Ain’t Wastin Time No More.” Another smoker, leading into Dr. John’s “Walk On Gilded Splinters.” Man I love the drums on this one. Butch, Mark and Jaimoe just rip it up. As a personal note, I cannot stress how much Mark Q. adds to the mix in my opinion. Especially on this kind of tune. The drum break down was just amazing. And the call and response guitar battle between Derek and Warren was just plain cool.
I was mesmerized by a new instrumental piece that turned out to be a new lead in for “Rocking Horse.” Warren Haynes once again kicked major buttocks both vocally and on his Les Paul. They returned to the sweet, mellow jam and then built it back into a frenetic rocking horse to be sure. Without missing a beat, they moved into a nice surprise, “Gambler’s Roll.” More soul than a vintage vinyl James Brown album. Good stuff.
Ain’t no way to get the ABB crowd going better than to jump into “Revival,” and when the opening riffs sounded, there was a collective scream from all in attendance. The sixties were back and living in New York City.
The stage remained dark for several minutes, and I was sure we were about see our first special guest of the evening. Not yet. What we did get was a funky cool “Woman Across The River” with Warren singing the Freddie King staple. I heard Little Milton rip on this one once and it was stellar. Tonight’s version was just as good.
Warren brought out jazz greats Randy Brecker on trumpet, a master musician who has played with everyone from Blood, Sweat and Tears to Bruce Springsteen to Frank Zappa - and Lenny White, the Return to Forever drummer, and just launched it all to Mars with “Dreams.” An intriguing concept that really worked well. Stellar actually. And set one was over.
After an unusually long break, the second set kicked off with Gregg strapping on the acoustic for “Melissa.” I never get tired of that one.
In the dark, I watched as the crew set up an instrument down front. An electric piano? No, it looked like a pedal steel. Could it be? Yep. Gregg introduced Robert Randolph and drummer Adam Nussbaum and off they went into “Turn On Your Lovelight.” Robert and Derek got into some sick call and response, and I heard from many that this was the best jam of the run so far and I tend to agree. Without skipping a beat, they were on to “One Way Out,” which just rattled the walls of the Beacon. Robert gets sounds out of that steel that just blow my mind. He was great as always.
Next, Randy Brecker and Lenny White returned for a spacey jazz jam on Miles Davis’ “In a Silent Way.” Warren was hittin’ the note John McLaughlin style. Beautiful. And the segue into “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” was seamless. Brecker took the song to a whole new place, and while I am a Dickey Betts fanatic and just loved his playing on this one with Duane and also with Warren, this version tonight was equally mind blowing. Derek Trucks, ladies and gentlemen. The boy is amazing. And brother Gregg soloing on B-3 was very nice to hear as well. The extended “drums” was awesome, with Butch, Mark and Lenny White.
Right after drums, the band was joined by none other than Stanley Clarke, thumping that bass to beat the band. Clarke owned the stage. He got right up close to Oteil and the two of them gave whole new meaning to the words “bottom end.” After a particularly funky solo, Stanley gave Oteil a high five, and Oteil stepped up to the mic for some serious scat vocals with his own six string bass solo extraordinaire. Holy Moogis! That was a stellar jam to end a stellar show. But was it really over at 11:35? No way.
The band returned for an encore with “Mountain Jam,” pushing the envelope and sending this reporter into the stratosphere. I love “Mountain Jam!” Well, especially when it bleeds into Warren singing Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.” What?! Amazing, yet again. Yes, I am running out of adjectives. They were that good tonight. Then a return to “Mountain Jam” to wrap it all up. All I can really say is “Wow.” And maybe, “Thank you for visiting our planet.”
