The curtain came up, the brother Duane slide show started up, and the Allmans kicked off tonight’s show with “Hot ‘Lanta,” one of my old favorites, and a song I don’t hear them play all that often. It’s always a treat. The twin leads were tight, the drums were perfect, Oteil was thumping, Gregory was wailing on B-3 and all was right with the world. I could tell it was gonna be another monster of a show, and if the guest rumors panned out, it could be absolutely amazing.

Next came “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More.” Man, Gregg and the guys have done a stupendous job of paying tribute to Duane this year. It makes an old Southern Rocker’s heart smile. Again, Derek Trucks blew me away with his slide dexterity. As an aside, I just finally picked up his latest DTB cd, Already Free today, and it kills. Just the best album he has done yet. Buffalo says, check it out!

Oteil started laying down a funky bass line and I knew it was that funky new opening jam they have been using to lead into “Rocking Horse.” Sounded good, man. Then in comes Warren with the equestrian boogie. The song sounded particularly good tonight for some reason. Intense and spot on. Especially Warren’s Gov't Mule style lead, and the “Little Martha” and “Blue Sky” teases tossed in. Help me now.

Without even thinking about stopping, they launched headlong into “Trouble No More,” with Gregg singing from deep in the gut. Great version., with Derek down shifting into overdrive and leaving fifty feet of smoking rubber on the road.

Warren announced that they had “several” guests tonight, and with that, Thom Doucette returned to the stage along with Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin’ for some serious blues on “Goin’ Down Slow.” The blues had come to New York City, fo sho.

It just got hotter and hotter as they took off on “A Change is Gonna Come.” Bob shared vocals with Warren and the guitars just burned red hot. Thom laid back, but when he got the signal, he burned on the harp. Yeah baby. The blues!

I was thrilled to hear them announce Sonny Landreth as the next guest, but the song choice was questionable. “Midnight Rider” was an odd choice. Sonny tried to put in some of his hot licks, but “Rider” is not really a “jam” song. Oh well. Strike one.

Redemption came fast and furious with “Dreams.” Now there is a song that lends itself to major jamage. Sonny proceeded to take his Strat for a walk, and it sounded superior. Nice and jazzy.

Warren brought out John Popper and his absolutely original harmonica stylings, and Popper joined the Brothers and Sonny for “Southbound,” just rocking the Theatre. Popper was handling call and responses from Warren, Derek and Sonny. It was a red hot set closer.

In one of the downright biggest surprises of the run, set two started with no introduction. Lights came up and there stood ZZ Top icon Billy Gibbons, surrounded by the Brothers, all sporting long beards and sunglasses. Hilarious. I am still laughing. They opened with “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” with Billy changing the words to reflect New York and The Allman Brothers Band. Too great. Derek looked like Jimmy Herring with a longer beard. Warren looked uncannily like Jerry Garcia.

Billy spoke while everyone took off their beards (now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d ever write,) Billy said, “That’s what we like about The Allman Brothers. No rules.” Then he changed it. “No they do have two rules. Number one, no drinking during the gospel numbers. Rule number two. No gospel numbers.” I thought Oteil was gonna bust a gut laughing. Man, the mood became light and fun and set the stage for an extraordinary blues jam on “Stormy Monday.” Billy smoked his solo, and when Derek was playing, Billy was fanning him. So cool.

Billy Gibbons was having a great time, and giving kudos to The Allmans at every turn. “Statesborro Blues” was another smoker, with Billy and Warren battling it out on Les Paul Gold Tops. Amazing doesn’t even begin to cover it. At the end, Billy thanked the Brothers and the man who started it all, the “great Duane Allman.”

Billy left the stage and Warren took off on “Same Thing,” which turned into a swank jam with John Popper returning to the stage. Great bass from Oteil. Amazing guitar from both Warren and Derek. I have learned to expect no less.

First, there is a mountain...Then, a Mountain Jam Sandwich. Yep. “Mountain Jam” began with an ethereal air and a tease of “In a Silent Way,” and worked into a full tilt psychedelic experiment, then into the classic “Mountain Jam” twin leads. From there, it was no holds barred. Derek did a solo where he was attacking his SG like Jimi Hendrix, bending strings, detuning the machine heads - he opened up a whole box of tricks in one amazing solo run. Wow. Then it bled into a rocking “Smokestack Lightning” and on into a “Third Stone From The Sun” jam before returning full circle to “Mountain Jam.” An amazing half hour.

For the evening’s encore, they brought back Sonny Landreth, Bob Margolin and John Popper for a smoldering “One Way Out” to wrap up another stellar evening of peachy Allman-mania. Another one for the books.
