Tonight was forty years to the day that the band played their first gig in Jacksonville, Florida, so we all knew it would be something special. Rumors were flying about Dickey Betts showing up. Others tossed out “family” names like Berry Oakley, Jr., Devon Allman, Chuck Leavell, Jack Pearson... All I knew from the get-go was that it was gonna be a stone cold jam. One to look forward to.

The band kicked it off with the first two songs from their first album, “Don’t Want You No More” and “It Ain’t My Cross to Bear.” Gregg was giving it 110 percent, starting out with his hair down, letting his freak flag fly again.

Then came song three from the 1969 debut album, “Black Hearted Woman.” Derek Trucks was hittin’ Duane Allman licks left and right, and Warren Haynes kept it real on the Les Paul. As always, “BHW” went off into a skyrocketing jam session that was a fitting tribute to brother Duane. During one of his leads, Derek exploded into a super jazz nova, with all of those unique right handed finger upstrokes. Truly unique style on that kid. Stellar. At the end of the song they projected a still photo of the original band behind the stage. Cool.

To wrap up their run of side one of the debut album, they launched into a smokin’ “Trouble No More.” Man, oh man. The band was cookin’ on the front burner. Was “side two” comin? No doubt.

For the first time this run, “Every Hungry Woman” smoked the stage. And I do mean smoked. Warren and Derek were on fire. Butch was pounding the skins in one of the new Duane t-shirts, as were Jaimoe and Mark, and Oteil was in the pocket as always. What a set!

“Dreams” was next, and it was intense. Best its sounded since 1971. No kidding. Just magic tonight. Then they closed out their run through of the first album, as well as their first set, with a high octane, clean burning “Whipping Post.” Absolut Allman. Balls to the wall jammin’ that I can barely put into words. To say they transcended time and space would kinda be an understatement. Just amazing.

Set two. Idlewild South. The band took off on “Revival,” sounding just perfect. Once again the air was filled with ultra-tight jams. Derek took it to another level and Warren followed suit. One of my favorite ABB songs for sure. Although I did harbor the dream that Dickey would be onstage tonight, especially for “Revival” and “Liz Reed.” Ah, but people move on I guess, and things change, still the road goes on forever.

“Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’” kept it rocking. It was like the definitive show for ABB old schoolers like me, at least so far. And as much as I have enjoyed the dozens of special guests, I must admit, tonight’s show is one of the best of the run. Just getting back to where it all begins.

Continuing the songs of their second album Idlewild South in order, “Midnight Rider” was next. Warren harmonized tighter than ever with Gregory’s lead vocal, and I found myself flashing back to buying the 45 when it came out. Sixty-nine cents it cost me. Yep. The good ol’ days.

“Liz Reed” came next, and the guys just blew me away. Absolutely stunning . Oteil was thumping in the pocket man, and sporting a Triumph t-shirt I am sure as a not to Duane. And when it came time for his moment in the solo spotlight, Burbridge simply outdid himself on the 6-string bass, playing some of the most beautiful improv, adding vocal nuances here and there. It was superior. The drums section was awesome as well, I just love it when the three of them get it going. Just as the super-long “Liz Reed” was winding down, The Brothers went straight into “Hoochie Coochie Man,” with Warren singing his heart out. Awesome.

This may be the first time I have ever heard “Please Call Home” played live. What a treat. Wow, Gregg sang this so perfectly tonight. I am ready for a taper copy. Anyone? So fine.

Then straight into “Leave My Blues at Home,” and it just kept on getting better and better, with both Derek and Warren simply going to town (with a pocket full of cash) on the leads. Wow. The first two albums, in their entirety. And without a missed note or a fumble of any kind. DVD material, I must say. Well, except for the encore. Gregg must have gotten tired and mixed up the order of the words on “Statesboro Blues,” although it still rocked solid and hard. A nice end to an amazing show. At the end, Gregg said “Thank you so much, come back tomorrow night and we will have more mistakes for you.” Now that is keeping it real!

We don’t need no stinking guest stars! We have The Allman Brothers Band!
