The powers that be were playing some mighty fine music through the p.a. prior to the show, Edgar Winter’s White Trash, Robbie Robertson, Buffalo Springfield... It really set the mood for a great night. That ,and seeing Chuck Leavell’s keyboard rig onstage.

The lights went down, the curtain came up, and the Duane Allman memorial slide show was played, backed by a beautiful rendition of “Little Martha” from Warren Haynes, Oteil Burbridge and Derek Trucks. Breathtaking.

Then Gregg Allman kicked it into fifth gear with “Done Somebody Wrong.” Warren was squalling on that red 1961 335, and when Gregg said into the mic, “Ah, play the blues!,” Derek ripped on the SG. It was sounding like a red hot one coming our way.

“Trouble No More” was next, and Derek was again channeling the very spirit of Duane Allman. Mind blowing. Then came the new jam intro to “Rocking Horse,” followed by an especially hot version of the song. Warren sang his ass off. I don’t know why, maybe because it was the final show of the run, but everybody was spot on tonight, sounding like solid gold. (And I don’t mean the lip-syncing eighties TV show with the hot dancers.)

“RH” went off into various and sundry “movements,” from a “Third Stone from the Sun” tease to balls to the wall rocking to a laid back, Dead-like vibe (similar to “The Eleven”)with Derek picking some primo lead runs. At one point, Derek and Oteil were really playing off one another big time. Very other wordly, spacey, and with a “Blue Sky” tease tossed in for good measure. Yes, the band was on tonight.

One of my favorite ABB covers of the run came next, as they took off on “Walk On Gilded Splinters.” Funky New Orleans Dr. John fun for sure.

Next came a song the band had not yet performed during this run, one from their most recent studio album Hittin’ The Note, “Who To Believe.” A great sounding blues vocal from brother Gregg. Nice addition.

Gregg gave a really nice introduction to a true mentor of his and Duane's, Floyd Miles, who sang the soup out of Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign.” Major blues guitars from Derek and Warren. Super fine vocals from Mr. Miles.

Then Gregg introduced the great Chuck Leavell, a former Allman Brother and long time touring member of The Rolling Stones, and they began “Stormy Monday,” with Gregg waving to Chuck, who was set up on the opposite side of the stage, and laughing. Floyd Miles shared vocal duties, and when Chuck took a piano run, Oteil could be seen playing that 5-string bass and grinning from ear to ear, just shaking his head. Leavell has that effect on people. Me, at least.

Next was “Come and Go Blues,” from one of the albums recorded when Chuck was a brother, Brothers and Sisters, yeah baby. Man oh man, did it sound good. Talk about world class musicians? We had a stage full there. The call and response segment between Warren and Chuck was priceless.

For the set closer, they kept with that very same album to play the classic “Jessica,” and man oh man, did it rock. Paul T. Riddle joined in on drums. Chuck went all up side of that piano, and Warren and Derek aced the double leads. A timeless instrumental. (And the first lead I ever learned on guitar, from the record!) Chuck added a beautiful “Little Martha” piano version in the middle before hittin’ the note on his familiar, never duplicated run from the original record.

Intermission trivia. Paul T. Riddle (founding member of The Marshall Tucker Band) won his only Grammy as a member of The Allman Brothers by sitting in on the live version of “Jessica” on 2nd Set, which won Best Instrumental that year.

Speaking of second set.

I want to give another shout out to the guys who create living art every night, The Brotherhood of Light, formed in 1967. They were the same ones who blew many a young mind at Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditoriums.

Speaking of mind blowing. After an extended intermission, the band returned and introduced Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, and proceeded to play “Sugaree,” Yes sir. That’s what I’m talking about. I got a real jolt out of watching Bobby Weir watch Derek during his solo. There’s been a lot of that this run, i have noticed. The song flowed like a psychedelic river. I thought this must be what it was like all the time inside Timothy Leary’s head. Very mellow. Very awesome.

Next came the perennial Dead jam tune “I Know You Rider,” setting the stage for more acid jams and smooth grooves. Peaches and Dancing Bears, everywhere. I liked the song, bit it started getting a little monotonous even for old jammers like me. Eventually it ended, and they took off on another Dead classic, “Franklin’s Tower,” as Chuck Leavell joined in on piano. The Dead were never known as great vocalists, but it was great to hear Bobby’s familiar vocals, and then Phil took a verse. Oops! Sorry, Deadheads. Like Randy Jackson would say, “It just didn’t cut it for me. dawg.” All that said, “FT” rocked! Especially Chuck’s piano solo, and the embedded teases of “Mountain Jam” and “Blue Sky.”

At 11:53 The Allman’s left all the guests in the wings and turned it up to eleven with “Black Hearted Woman,” just blowing it out full tilt boogie. Mighty fine. Stellar guitar from Warren, Derek and Oteil’s bass never sounded better. What a band! And our first after midnight jam of the entire run.

And it just got better. First Derek teases us with “Mountain Jam,” then with “Little Martha,” then out comes Chuck Leavell for a definitive “Mountain Jam!” Excellent solos all around, including a very nice piano run from Chuck, and an ultra-cool interplay between Chuck and Oteil. What a perfect, absolutely perfect, jam to end the tribute to Duane Beacon run. Or so I thought.

The Brothers returned to the stage for an encore around 12:30, with Gregg thanking the audience and adding, “We sure have enjoyed being here these past fifteen nights.” Then it was on to a smoking “Statesborro Blues” to wrap it all up. Incredible.While the music continued, Warren took the mic to thank everyone for “being a part of the celebration. 40 years. Thank you so much.” At the end of the song, they all came out front to take a bow and wave. How cool. And “Little MArtha” played through the p.a. as the Duane slide show repeated.

Well. Now comes the hard part. The end of the run. Say it ain’t so, Joe! Well. The good part is, for those with Moogis, you have six months to relive all of these shows and more.
