Widespread Panic’s Sunday White House Visit

Yesterday while sitting in the Wanee leisure compound with Widespread Panic’s drummer Todd Nance, he relayed some interesting news. For instance, on Sunday the band will get a tour of the White House’s West Wing.

He told me: “The whole band is touring the West Wing on Sunday. I don’t know if we’ll get to meet anybody of note (laughs). Obama’s probably out of the country. A friend of the band works there and he’s tied in with that. Yeah, I’m excited about it. I’m sure a lot of bands get to do it, but we’re looking forward to it…”

We talked about next week’s D.C. gigs, traveling, the Wanee festival, old friends, the new record, the upcoming tour, songwriting rights, studios, maybe even a little spoken word session. Stephen Stills was playing onstage as we talked. The band’s new CD, Dirty Side Down—recorded at old friend John Keane’s Athens studio—proves worth waiting for until May 25, the official release date. It’s strong material. This weekend’s Wanee performances kick off the band’s spring 2010 tour. So, there’s a great spirit hovering over the band right now and there’s good reason for anticipation. But, Panic at The White House…how about that?
