Why Swampland Sports Loves the BCS

Posted: May 01, 2008

Despite winning back to back national titles in football, the SEC susre seems to hate the BCS.  Lately, this hatred has been reaching a new level.

It all started when University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams announced a proposal for an 8 team playoff to replace the current BCS system in the wake of LSU's victory in the BCS title game earlier this year.

Yesterday, the SEC's Mike Slive proposed an additional game to be played  after the bowl games.  In essence, it would create a four team playoff.  Luckily, this proposal fell in deaf ears.

The national sports media is crying as loud as they can at this one.  ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski flames about it.  UGA grad and ESPN writer Mark Schlabach seems to dislike the decision as well.

We understand the chest thumping is part of the SEC game, and yes, last year's Bulldogs fielded a mighty fine team, one that might well have given LSU a run for their money, but it was a wrong-headed move

Southerners are passionate about college football.  We are also competitve as hell.  We rise to a challenge, especially if it involves schools outside of the South.  It seems as though each SEC team has been on the outside looking in at one time or another come bowl time.

However, we dismiss the idea of a playoff system for our beloved college football.

Check out our reasons here.
