Film in the South: Sixth Annual Oxford Film Festival Begins February 5

This has been an exciting weekend, and so if you have recovered from Superbowl Sunday you might want to make plans to travel to Oxford, Mississippi, home of William Faulkner, Ol' Miss, and the celebrated Oxford Film Festival. This week, February 5-8, marks the Sixth Annual Oxford Film Festival and it promises to be a block buster. Two of the most visited films on the web site are Prom NIght in Mississippi and Ballast.

Prom Night in Mississippi tells the story of actor Morgan Freeman's offer in 1997 to fund the senior prom in Charleston High School in Mississippi under one condition: that it be integrated. Ballast is the tale of a young boy in the Mississippi Delta struggling to come to terms with the death of his father while his mother and uncle squabble over what to make of what is left.

The documentary film Noshoba will make its Mississippi debut at the Oxford Film Festival. Noshoba is the film that finally tells the true story behind the “Mississippi Burning” murders, and its Mississippi premiere will be at this year’s Oxford Film Festival. The premiere will be held at Oxford Malco Studio on Saturday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m. Directors Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano will attend.

This year's festival will also feature the world premiere of the documentary Crude Independence. According to the press release Crude Independence is a documentary film "about the heartland in the process of transplanting itself, and the new heart is pumping oil.... Director Noah Hutton takes us to the town of Stanley (population 1300), sitting atop the largest oil discovery in the history of the North American continent, and captures the change wrought by the unprecedented boom. Through revealing interviews and breathtaking imagery of the northern plains, Crude Independence is a rumination on the future of small town America—a tale of change at the hands of the global energy market and America’s unyielding thirst for oil."

The 2009 Oxford Film Festival will present 95 feature-length films, including one world premiere and two regional premieres, representing 14 countries. In addition to the documentary and narrative feature films, there are documentary and narrative short films, an Experimental Block on Saturday afternoon, a Music Video Block, and an Animation Block. OFF is truly one of the great film festivals and it is only six years old. If you have not made plans to attend this year's festival, definitely mark your calendar for February 2010. OFF is not to be missed.

And speaking of missing, tomorrow will mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Buddy Holly "the day the music died."

Once again, I missed it. There is always bad weather here in North Alabama in early February. Everyone said it was fabulous. I am aiming for next year--and I am looking forward to the Lindsey Film Fest in March.
