ACC Daily Fever: 2009 Is a Make or Break Year for Al Groh at UVA

Can Virginia get back to the days of George Welsh when the Cavaliers were a consistently solid team in the ‘90s?

One man who will try and help that effort is first-year secondary coach, Anthony Poindexter. The former UVA All-American safety will try to bring back some of that Welsh tradition (like his game-saving tackle on Warren Dunn in the huge Florida State win in 1995) to a team that has fallen behind Virginia Tech in stature in the Commonwealth.

After the second losing season in three years, it was a tumultuous offseason for Head Coach Al Groh. He let go three assistants, including his offensive coordinator and son Mike Groh. The 2009 campaign may very well decide Groh’s own fate.

His Cavaliers have had a winning ACC record only three times in eight seasons, as opposed to 13 of the 14 seasons prior to his tenure.

Realistically, UVA has never had the tradition of being a top football school.  Their relationship to football in general is in line with the pre-expansion ACC which was solely focused on basketball.

But the stakes are higher now, and it doesn't help that their in state rival from Blacksburg begins the season in the top ten.
