ACC Daily Fever: North Carolina Revives Season With Improbable Win

Posted: Oct 30, 2009

Nobody wins in Blacksburg, right? Especially not teams that enter late October without a conference victory. However, North Carolina changed both of those last night with a shocking 20-17 win at Virginia Tech.

It's not a surprise that this game would be a defensive battle, but the Hokies always seem to pull away at Lane Stadium.

When UNC quarterback Tyler Yates threw an interception to begin the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech returned it inside the five and consequently scored a touchdown to take their first lead of the game. Most expected the Tar Heels to be done at that point, but Yates led them a long drive that resulted in a game-tying field goal. Then, UNC would recover a fumble and kick the game winner on the last play.

It's a huge win for Butch Davis, who showed that he had not lost his team after last week's devastating loss at home to Florida State. For Va. Tech, it showed that they had not recovered from their loss at Georgia Tech, and it continued the league's woes in competing for national respectability.
