Favre Still Rules Though Saints March and Vikings Retreat

I would not want to be Brett Favre this morning---over forty, utterly frustrated, and physically and emotionally devastated. However, this Mississippi born grand old man of football is my hero, and he's not done yet. As Yogi Berra used to say "It ain't over 'til it's over," and until Brett Favre walks off the field for the final time, he is still a contender and the holder of more records than anyone can count, including most completed passes and MVP.

Favre was born in Gulfport, MS, not far from the home of the New Orleans Saints. A Saints' fan for much of his life, he must have found it exciting to meet as his rival the team he had once pulled for. Favre never played football for the New Orleans Saints. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons after his graduation from the University of Southern Mississippi where he had been the starting quarter back for four years. After a year with the Falcons, he was traded to the Green Bay Packers where he was their starting quarterback for every game from 1992 until his first retirement in 2008.

Favre's retirement was brief, and as quickly as he had left, he came out of retirement and was traded to the New York Jets. He played with the Jets for one year before he once again announced his retirement in February of 2009. In August of that same year he emerged from his six month retirement to sign with the Minnesota Vikings and lead them to the 2010 Superbowl playoffs. In yesterday's penultimate game, a beaten and battered Favre "gutted it out" as his coach described it until the final minutes of overtime when an atypical error resulted in an interception, and the Saints kicked a field goal to win a trip to the Superbowl by three points. Favre limped from the field, his head all but bloody yet still unbowed.

How dearly I had hoped that the king of the quarterbacks would have the opportunity to meet the prince, Peyton Manning, the son of fellow Mississippian Archie Manning, in Superbowl XLIV, but such an encounter will never take place. Five turnovers, only a couple of which could be laid at the feet of Favre, resulted in the Vikings' defeat. Consequently, the Saints led by Drew Brees will meet Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts for the shootout at the Sun LIfe Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL.

It is an interesting coincidence that the Colt's quarterback Peyton Manning was actually born in New Orleans in 1976 when his father was playing for the Saints. On February 7, Peyton will be pitted agaist his father's former team in the 2010 Superbowl. Archie Manning played for the Saints between 1971 and 1982, then spent his years before his retirement, like Brett Favre, playing for the Minnesota Vikings.

What will Favre do now? Perhaps not even Brett Favre knows, but I hope he will rest on his hard earned and much deserved laurels before he takes the hit that damages him permanently. His record is almost unbelievable. He is the only player to win the AP Most Valuable Player three consecutive times (1995–97). He led the Packers to seven division championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007), four NFC Championship Games (1995, 1996, 1997 and 2007), winning two (1996 and 1997), and two Super Bowl appearances, winning one (Super Bowl XLIV). He holds many NFL records including: most career touchdown passes, most career passing yards, most career pass completions, most career pass attempts, most career interceptions thrown, most consecutive starts, and most career victories as a starting quarterback.

I salute him as he approaches the culmination of a brilliant career.
