Big East Teams In Our Region Have Great Potential

 As we wrap up our coverage of Signing Day and recruiting, there are three Footprint teams in the Big East that deserve a mention. 

We don't tend to write as much on the Big East because of its Northern roots and frustrating football/basketball split, but a couple of new coaching changes and some recriuting success could make these teams a player on the national level.

We'll start with West Virginia and coach Bill Stewart. There were many skeptics about the veteran coach's hire after Rich Rodriguez departed for Michigan, but Stewart has led the Mountaineers to consecutive nine-win seasons. Additionally, WVU was the only Big East school to bring in a Top 25 class recruiting class. It looks like Stewart and West Virginia are in good shape to continue their run of success.

Two new coaches who could make a huge impact in the Big East are Louisville's Charlie Strong and South Florida's Skip Holtz. After leaving Florida, Strong dramatically improved the Cardinals’ talents with an incoming class that seven players from the Sunshine State. During Bobby Petrino's incredible run, the Louisville roster was filled with players from Florida and Georgia. Strong looks like he will use the same formula for success in the Bluegrass State.

Holtz brought in a solid class this season, but many think that USF could really recruit with the big boys for the 2011 class. The Bulls are considered a 'sleeping giant' in college football because of the proximity to so many good players in Florida. Holtz talked about his recruiting plan:

"It's going to start with the 100 closest schools right here to South Florida," Holtz said Wednesday. "We're going to make this our home area. We're going to take these surrounding counties. We are going to recruit the entire state of Florida.

"And then, if we don't have the interest and can't find what we're looking for, then we'll turn and leave the state a little bit."

"It's all going to start here," he said. "We certainly are not going to leave the state to go spend a lot of time recruiting."

Our first two to three weeks in spring recruiting will all be spent in the state of Florida."

The Big East can be a puzzling conference at times, but West Virginia, Louisville and South Florida can all be factors for a league title. Even if the best long-term solution may be a realignment, these schools can build up quite a profile in the meantime by winning recruiting battles and translating those to BCS and big-time Bowl success.
