Rams and Jaguars Can Shape Their Franchises on Draft Day

The NFL Draft is upon us, and two of the teams in our Swampland footprint have a great chance to decide the direction of their franchise for the next few seasons. The NFL is a quarterback league, and both St. Louis and Jacksonville can select signal callers who will become the face of their respective clubs.

As far as the Rams, it seems like they will select Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford with the first overall choice. However, the St. Louis brass may believe the best method is to select defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh first and choose a quarterback later (33rd overall pick?) if they are worried about Bradford’s shoulder injury from last season. After passing on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez over the last two drafts, the smart choice would seem to be Bradford. The Rams have many needs, but getting a franchise quarterback is a must in the NFL.

A bigger debate resides in Jacksonville, where the struggling-for-fan-support Jaguars have the opportunity to draft hometown hero Tim Tebow. We wrote a year ago about marketing vs. football operations when it comes to drafting, and how the Jags should take a chance on Florida Gator receiver Percy Harvin (would have been nice to have the NFL’s Rookie of the Year, huh?). In that article we said “if you’re an NFL General Manager and feel like you have a chance to get a superstar, then you select him and you don’t worry about the local angle. However, if the evaluation is close, GMs could make more quality decisions to improve their team and their fan base with a local playmaker.”

So how does that affect the Jags and the Florida Gator superstar? Many believe that Jacksonville would be “reaching” to draft Tebow with the #10 pick. But the ultimate question becomes, how close is he to that level? The Jaguars traded this year’s second round pick in last year’s Draft in order to move up in the third round and select cornerback Derek Cox. That fact will make it very hard to try and back into the second round to get the former Heisman winner. The Jaguars could trade down and select Tebow later in Round 1, but that becomes very difficult because of the bonus money that Top 10 selections receive.

The reality for Jacksonville looks to be a choice between taking the hometown kid at #10, or selecting another solid player like Clemson running back C.J. Spiller (who head coach Jack Del Rio reportedly loves) or Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan. Obviously Tebow would bring a ton of momentum with fan support for a franchise that is constantly “blacked out” on television locally for not selling out their games. He also is considered a true leader whose ‘intangibles’ would benefit any team. As far as the concern over Tebow’s accuracy or throwing motion, consider these facts:

Playing in the nation's most athletic conference, Tebow attempted 995 career passes. He threw 16 interceptions. That's a pick every 62 attempts. Seems like he knows where to go with the ball and gets it to the open guy. Last year's No. 1 overall selection, Matthew Stafford, threw an interception every 30 attempts while at Georgia.

In his four years at UF, Tebow completed more than 66 percent of his passes. He threw 88 touchdowns and ran for 57 more. He was 36-6 as a starter, and Florida won 48 out of 55 games with him on the team contributing. Yes, he's got a relentless work ethic and possesses great leadership skills. Forget that as well for a moment. Focus on the production. Look at the numbers and the competition those numbers came against.

The reality for both St. Louis and Jacksonville is that their front offices need to have the courage to make a bold decision and draft their future quarterbacks. They cannot worry about national media backlash or criticism. Of course there are many examples of highly-drafted quarterbacks not succeeding in the NFL, but there are just as many times where top choices at other positions do not work out. Just look at these two teams and their recent choices of Chris Long, Jason Smith, Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves (just traded to the Raiders for a fifth-round pick). Are Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow really that big of a risk? Almost every successful NFL team has a franchise quarterback, and the Rams and Jaguars have a chance to get theirs on Thursday night.
