Looking Good at Sixty-Three--Jimmy Buffett Rocks the Gulf Coast

Been there, done that, have the pictures to prove it, but I wish I had been in Gulf Shores last night for the Jimmy Buffett and Friends Benefit Concert. Jimmy Buffett, who will celebrate his sixty-fourth birthday on December 25 of this year, looked just like the beach boy that he has always been with his "One Love, One Ocean" tee shirt, jams, and bare feet---flipflops lying nearby. As he has for over forty years, the old man of the sea captivated the audience who sang along with all the great Buffett hits. Some of the fans were too young to know the words, but that did not stop them from singing along with gusto.

"It's like Jazz Fest with an ocean," Buffett told the enthusiastic crowd. Running the gamut of emotions from cheers to tears, the audience swayed and danced to "Fins" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and then wept openly when Buffett began singing a rewritten version of "When the Coast is Clear."  Buffet fans were treated to all the old favorites from "Mother Ocean" (aka "A Pirate Looks at Forty") to "Margaritaville" with a line revised from the original to " It's all BP's fault."

Buffett also performed a rousing redition of "Bama Breeze," his hymn to the Flora-Bama lounge. The song has recently been associated with Lulu's--the restaurant and bar owned by Jimmy Buffett's sister Lulu Buffett in Gulf Shores.  "One Love, One Ocean" tee shirts can be ordered from Lulu's. Proceeds from the sale of the shirts will help fund scholarship programs at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the University of Southern Mississippi.

The free concert, which also featured Jesse Winchester and Allen Toussaint and, of course, Coral Reefer Mac McAnally (born in Red Bay, Alabama) was part of an effort to attract tourism to the south's beaches following the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  A series of free concerts, including one by the great Neil Young, are planned to stimulate the economy along the coast which has suffered since the oil rig explosion in April of this year. Critics have traditionally been unkind to Buffett, but his fans have been staunch and loyal, and, by the way, Buffett cries all the way to the bank. As for me, I will just keep on smiling and singing "wasting away again in Margaritaville...."  Kudos to Jimmy Buffett and all those who have ralied to help save the Gulf.
