2010 ACC Football Preview

A new era begins in Tallahassee as Jimbo Fisher takes over for Florida State legend Bobby Bowden. The Seminoles should have a powerful offense led by senior quarterback Christian Ponder and will be favored to win the Atlantic Division. FSU will be challenged by Clemson, who will have to replace All-American playmaker C.J. Spiller. Boston College and NC State should compete for postseason play, with Maryland and Wake Forest looking like longshots to get into the upper half of the division.

The Coastal race will be wide open, with stalwart Virginia Tech looking like the early favorite. The Hokies have a formidable backfield with signal caller Tyrod Taylor handing off to the talented duo of Ryan Williams and Darren Evans. Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech will also compete for a berth in the ACC Title Game. The Canes have a talented roster but a brutal schedule, while the Tar Heels potentially have a top defense if all of their players are eligible following the NCAA investigation involving NFL agents. Paul Johnson has proven that his Yellow Jackets will always be a tough foe, while Duke and Virginia will look for major improvement.

2010 ACC Games of the Year

Sept. 4 – North Carolina vs. LSU (Georgia Dome)
The conference has struggled the last two years in this new SEC/ACC tradition; the Tar Heels can improve the league’s credibility in this (anticipated) low-scoring affair.

Sept. 6 - Virginia Tech vs. Boise State (FedExField)
The whole nation will be watching this primetime gem on Labor Day. The Hokies can put their name into the national title race with a victory.

Sept. 11 - Miami at Ohio State; Florida State at Oklahoma
The two Sunshine State schools visit traditional powers in the season’s second week; a road win in either game would be huge for the ACC.

Oct. 2 – Miami at Clemson
This game was an overtime thriller last year at Miami. The winner here will build important conference momentum.

Oct. 9 – Florida State at Miami
The former superpowers are both aiming to become Top 10 regulars once again. This should be another classic with tons of points.

Oct. 23 – North Carolina at Miami
Since arriving in Chapel Hill, Butch Davis is 3-0 against his former school. Can he make it four in a row in this key Coastal battle?

Nov. 4 – Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech
A 28-23 win at home last year propelled the Yellow Jackets to the Division (and ACC) Title. The Hokies look for revenge this year in Blacksburg.

Nov. 13 – Clemson at Florida State
This one should decide the Atlantic Division. It will be different feel with no Bowden(s) walking the sidelines.

Nov. 20 – Virginia Tech at Miami
These longtime rivals will battle in South Florida with the Coastal Division crown on the line.

Nov. 27 – South Carolina at Clemson; Florida at Florida State; Georgia Tech at Georgia
The ACC took a damaging hit to its gridiron image in 2009 when its two Title Game teams (Clemson and Georgia Tech) lost to lower-ranked SEC squads in the regular season’s last week. These three need to fare better than 0-3 against their SEC rivals in the 2010 campaign.

Atlantic Division Outlook

Boston College – Expectations were low after the controversial Jeff Jagodzinski firing, but new coach Frank Spaziani did a solid job last year in leading the Eagles to an 8-5 record. BC will try to build on that momentum as they aim for a very impressive 12th bowl appearance in a row.

Clemson – Dabo Swinney led the squad to the division crown in 2009, but the Tigers are still looking for their first outright ACC Championship since 1991. They’ll have to do it this year without C.J. Spiller, but they will have productive quarterback Kyle Parker back in the fold. Another division title would speak volumes about Clemson becoming a top-notch program.

Florida State – It will be very unusual to see a Seminole sideline without Bobby Bowden. With that being said, new coach Jimbo Fisher has a very talented team and looks to be building the ‘Noles back to a national power. The FSU offense should be very solid this season with senior QB Christian Ponder and an outstanding line, while new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops will need to find some consistency for a unit that struggled mightily a year ago.

Maryland – The 2010 campaign could be the potential last season for former Coach of the Year (and UM alum) Ralph Friedgen. The very likeable coach led the Terrapins to six bowl games from 2001-2008, but the wheels came off last year as Maryland suffered their first 10-loss season in school history. The defense should be fairly solid this year, while the offense will break in new starting QB Jamarr Robinson.

NC State – The club got huge news with the return of Russell Wilson, who led the ACC with 31 touchdown passes in 2009. The veteran quarterback spurned Major League Baseball and will have a solid set of receivers to throw to this season. The defense will be looking for playmakers after struggling a year ago. Coach Tom O’Brien has taken the Wolfpack to only one Bowl in three seasons in Raleigh, and the fan base wants to see improvement in his 16-21 record as the NC State boss.

Wake Forest – Jim Grobe has done a very solid job in his nine years in Winston-Salem, but his tenth season will be a challenge. The Demon Deacons started 4-2 last year but missed the postseason after losing five of their final six. Wake returns only nine of 22 starters from last year, including the loss of the most prolific QB in school history, Riley Skinner.

Coastal Division Outlook

Duke – David Cutcliffe seems to be building a better roster with improved recruiting, but the process will take some time in Durham. The Blue Devils will break in new starting quarterback Sean Renfree, who will have preseason All-ACC receiver Donovan Varner (1,047 yards and 8 TDs last year) as his top target. Duke must improve on the nation’s worst rushing offense from 2009.

Georgia Tech – Paul Johnson has silenced any doubters that his spread-running attack would work in the ACC. Senior quarterback Josh Nesbitt is back to direct the offense, but the Jackets will miss four top stars from ’09 in running back Jonathan Dwyer, receiver Demaryius Thomas, defensive end Derrick Morgan and safety Morgan Burnett. Former Virginia head coach Al Groh is the new coordinator on defense.

Miami – Will this be the breakout year that Canes fans are looking for from Randy Shannon? As Miami aims to play in their first ACC Title tilt, the roster is loaded but so is the schedule. Quarterback Jacory Harris will lead the team into tough non-conference clashes at Ohio State and Pittsburgh, as well as a home battle against South Florida to end the season. Expectations are high for the ‘U’, and the fan base is ready to become a national power again.

North Carolina – Butch Davis was supposed to bring back one of the most talented and experienced defenses in the country after stars like DT Marvin Austin, LB Quan Sturdivant, CB Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams all returned for their seniors seasons. However, that incredible defense may be limited this year due to the cloud of an intense NCAA investigation. Davis will need better play from his offense this season, which starts with a high-profile contest in Atlanta against LSU.

Virginia – It’s a new era in Charlottesville as Mike London takes over for Al Groh on the sideline. London was a former assistant under Groh, and then went on to win an FCS National Championship as the head coach at Richmond (ironically, UVA’s first opponent this year). The cupboard is pretty empty here, so Cavalier fans will need to show patience as London tries to rebuild the program.

Virginia Tech – The Hokies look to be the league’s best hope for a national champion. Frank Beamer’s club returns an outstanding group of skill players, including All-American running back Ryan Williams and senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor. After being pursued by other big-time programs during the offseason, defensive coordinator Bud Foster returns to put together his usual solid unit. They will be challenged immediately, with the opener at FedExField against Boise State on Labor Day.
