LEAD STORY

The big news around the nation after Week 1 was the Virginia Tech loss to media-darling Boise State. Frank Beamer’s teams have usually played with solid fundamentals over the years, but this season’s highly-anticipated debut was riddled with mistakes in what had to feel like a self-inflicted loss. 

CBS SEC analyst Gary Danielson pointed out on the radio that Virginia Tech did not have a good game on the coaching end of things:

"I thought Va Tech had a rough night coaching last night. Boise was selling out to stop the run. Where was Va Tech's play action?"

The Hokies also missed a chance in front of the whole football-watching nation to put themselves in the BCS Title conversation and to help the ACC.  They also made a lot of BCS-haters happy.

We're not here to rip Boise St.  The Broncos have to be given credit for a quality win on the east coast. However, the disturbing fact after just one game has been ESPN’s coronation of the Broncos as guaranteed for the BCS Championship Game. The postgame reaction at the ‘Mothership’ went as follows:

Boise State does have a great chance to run the table and play for the Title. However, it would be a shame if two undefeated (or maybe even one-loss) teams coming out of a power league get shut out of the Championship discussion because ESPN sees it that way. The WAC schedule is very weak and is nothing like running through the SEC or Big 12 week in-week out. Boise even knows that fact—why do you think they are leaving their conference?

Another Boise point, Alabama's cupcake win from Week 1 (San Jose St) is a Boise St conference game next month.  Doesn't that say all you need to know about the WAC?

DEFINING SATURDAY

What an amazing Week 2 of the college football schedule! Our Swampland teams will play in some great matchups that will define the early part of the season.  There is a spotlight especially on the state of Florida this week as five different Sunshine State teams have potentially season-defining games.

The two ACC schools, FSU and Miami, will visit traditional powers as the Hurricanes travels Ohio State and the Noles head to Oklahoma. Both teams will be underdogs on the road, but a victory for either one would be a huge sign that a return to glory is on the horizon.

For the ACC to be respected on the level of the big boys, these two former powerhouses must contend nationally again. Miami is just 58-31 since they met the Buckeyes in the controversial BCS Title game at the end of the 2002 season.  Jacory Harris vs. Terrelle Pryor should be an interesting gunslinger's duel.

FSU has been up and down in recent years as they prepared for the exit of Bobby Bowden, and the stakes for new coach Jimbo Fisher have never been higher.  The Noles face a tough trip to Norman to take on Big 12 favorite Oklahoma.  The Big 12 usually doesn't ramp up until Texas faces OU, but this game could end up defining two key conferences in our Footprint.

Needless to say, both of Florida's ACC teams have the chance Saturday to say, “We’re back” in a big way.

Staying within the sate, USF also visits a Gators team who struggled mightily on offense last week against a pedestrian MAC squad.  Last year, USF's surprise win in Tallahassee signaled the end of the Bobby Bowden era.  USF is no slouch and will have nothing to lose under new head coach Skip Holtz.  The Gators have played nervously ever since they won it all in the 2009 BCS Championship game.  They can't afford to do so on Saturday.

UCF also hosts NC State.  The Knights are a C-USA favorite this season, and they desperately need a signature win.  UCF has been mentioned as a possible target of expansion for the Big East.  This nationally televised night game on CBS College Sports could serve as an announcement of their arrival as emerging program.

As always, it will also be a huge gridiron day in the SEC.  Auburn survived in Starkville last night in a typical SEC head knocker.  MSU and Auburn were expected to light up the scoreboard, but it came down to defense instead.  (This is what Boise St never has to face week in and week out which is why folks in Swampland country will always look at them with slight suspicion.)  

Of course, most of the national attention will focus on the renewal of the Penn State-Alabama game. These two traditional powers (58 combined Bowl victories) met in the Sugar Bowl twice in the ‘70s and played every year from 1981-1990. Bama will be favored in this clash, but the Nittany Lions are actually 2-1 vs. the Tide when playing in Tuscaloosa.

However, the biggest statement of the weekend could be made by a South Carolina victory at home against Georgia. The Gamecocks have usually been “on the outside looking in” at the SEC East race, but this could be the season that Steve Spurrier finally gets Carolina to Atlanta in December. The Dawgs have a new quarterback in Aaron Murray and will be without All-SEC wideout A.J. Green. The path for South Carolina has never been clearer than it is right now for them to win the East.
