Southern College Football - Week 4 Themes

LEAD STORY

Week 4 will be ‘Definition Saturday’ in our Swampland Footprint, especially in the SEC West. We should begin to see the true identity of many of our teams and what they have the potential to achieve in 2010. The big game that is dominating much of this week’s conversation is No. 1-rated Alabama visiting upstart Arkansas. The Razorbacks have high expectations this year, with quarterback Ryan Mallet leading a prolific offense. However, Nick Saban’s defense has made a habit during their current 17-game winning streak of making good offenses look bad. Mallett only completed 12-of-35 passes against Bama a year ago in a 35-7 loss. The home crowd will help the Hogs, but this game will show if Arkansas has closed the gap in the SEC West or if the Tide will continue to roll.

Another defining clash will take place at Auburn when the 3-0 Tigers host the 3-0 South Carolina. New quarterback Cam Newton has energized the Auburn fan base, but the Tigers have scraped by in victories against Mississippi State and Auburn. Is Gene Chizik’s squad a true contender? How they play against the Gamecocks should give us a good idea if the Tigers can threaten in the West. Meanwhile, Steve Spurrier’s bunch is winning with a stellar defense and a solid running game (is the ole Ball Coach okay with that formula?). A win at Auburn could vault Carolina into the SEC East favorite, but the Gamecocks have a brutal road as they still have to play Alabama and Arkansas besides their usual tough East slate. Auburn leads the league in rushing offense and South Carolina leads in rushing defense after three games, so whoever wins that battle should gain a major advantage in this intense contest.

Two coaches under the microscope this season are Georgia’s Mark Richt and LSU’s Les Miles. The Bulldogs have already lost their first two SEC games, so a win at Mississippi State could be a season saver. Are the Dawgs just the victim of a tough early schedule or are their deeper problems in Athens? We will find out Saturday in Starkville. The Bengal Tigers are 3-0, but the expectations are always high in Baton Rouge. Despite being the undefeated, there are concerns about the LSU passing offense that ranks last in the league. Les Miles’ crew will host West Virginia Saturday night, and their offense will need more production against the Mountaineers.

It could also be a defining weekend for both Kentucky and Florida. The Wildcats are 3-0, but the competition has been rather lackluster. The Gators have scored over 30 points in each of their three wins, but the fan base is still sweating the inconsistent offense. John Brantley and crew will have the chance to ease those concerns in the Swamp against a hungry UK squad.

ACC NOTES

It will definitely be a defining game in Atlanta when NC State (3-0) meets Georgia Tech (2-1). Not much was expected from the Wolf Pack, and they have cruised through three inferior opponents. Quarterback Russell Wilson is a player, but can the NC State defense stop the Tech running attack? Interestingly, State has not played against Paul Johnson’s Yellow Jackets the last two seasons, but Tom O’Brien’s bunch did have a couple of extra days to prepare. We will also see if Tech has a chance to compete in the league race this season. That answer seemed to be no after a puzzling loss at Kansas, but the Jackets bounced back to defeat UNC last week.

Virginia Tech has been a hard team to figure out. With all of the mistakes against Boise and then the shocking loss to James Madison, it seemed like the Hokies had some huge issues. Star running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) will likely be out this week when they travel up north to meet Boston College. So BC is the pick, right? Not necessarily. This could very well be the week where Frank Beamer’s bunch starts their annual successful run through the conference.

Florida State has learned the hard way not to take Wake Forest for granted over the last 5-6 years, but the Demon Deacons are headed for a second straight road trip after losing 68-24 to Stanford. The Seminoles’ talent will probably win this one easily.

Miami won against an unimpressive Pitt team on Thursday night. Quarterback Jacory Harris will have to protect the ball better the next two weeks against Clemson and FSU.

BIG XII NOTES

Unfortunately, the storylines in the league right now seemed limited to Texas’ games against Oklahoma (Oct. 2) and Nebraska (Oct. 16). Obviously the winner of the Red River Rivalry will be the heavy South favorite, while the Cornhuskers look to be unstoppable in the North Division. The conference is pretty top-heavy, and that’s not a good sign when one of those teams (Nebraska) is leaving for the Big Ten.
