Southern College Football - Week 6 Themes

LEAD STORY

Florida State and Miami meet Saturday night in South Beach for their usual heated clash. This rivalry has lost a little luster over the last 5-6 seasons, but it was THE game for nearly 20 years, especially in the late '80s and early ‘90s. When the ACC welcomed the Hurricanes earlier this decade, the league put Miami and FSU in different divisions. Obviously, the conference’s goal was to give these Sunshine State superpowers an opportunity to meet a second time each season in a high profile Championship setting. However, that plan has not come to fruition with the ‘Canes having never won the Coastal division and the Seminoles only making it to the ACC Title game once in 2005.

Each team has lost a big time non-conference matchup this season, but this year’s game could be a building block to getting the rivalry back to the nation’s elite. For the first time since 2006, both Miami and Florida State enter the game ranked in the Top 25. This battle could be a preview of the 2010 ACC Championship Game, and that is exactly what the league needs to compete with the more powerful gridiron conferences. The ‘Noles and ‘Canes have to be the two programs that get back to being ‘superpowers’ and raise up the quality of play across the ACC.

As far as the game, Miami and FSU are putting up big points, led by quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Jacory Harris. The last nine matchups have been decided by eight points or less – expect another tight one on Saturday. Here’s to hoping no field goals go ‘Wide Right’.

SEC BATTLES

The Alabama-South Carolina contest bring up some interesting questions: Can anyone beat the Tide in the regular season? Can South Carolina slow down the powerful running duo of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson? Can Steve Spurrier stick with the run game or decide on a quarterback? Those answers will become clear in Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks have had two weeks to prepare for Bama, who has not lost a regular season game since Auburn in November 2007. Steve Spurrier needs a signature win at SC, and getting the best of Nick Saban’s club would provide just that.

LSU fans are still wondering how they won --and what Les Miles was doing-- last week on the final play, while the Gators are licking their wounds after their painful loss in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers’ anemic offense faces an uphill battle against the Florida defense in the Swamp. Then again, it’s not like Urban Meyer’s bunch has been lighting up scoreboards either. Both offensive coordinators--LSU’s Gary Crowton and UF’s Steve Addazio—are under major scrunitny from their fan bases. Obvoiusly we expect a low-scoring affair, and each coaching staff has a chance to make their fans a little less anxious about their current standing.

Tennessee and Georgia usually translates into a key game in the SEC East race, but this year finds both teams with a losing record and just trying to get their first league win. The big story-besides the bad records- is the return of a head coach named Dooley to the Sanford Stadium sidelines for the first time since 1988. Derek Dooley will probably get one of the best receptions a visiting coach has ever received ‘Between the Hedges’. His father, legendary UGA coach Vince Dooley, will actually watch the game at home to avoid all of the drama. A win by either school would mean a ton to two teams off to a rough start.

METROPLEX MAYHEM

The Dallas area is already known for lots of traffic, but things could get really bad this Saturday afternoon with the confluence of college football games in the Metroplex. There are two big time neutral site games: former Southwest Conference rivals Arkansas and Texas A&M meet at Cowboys Stadium while Big 12 foes Texas Tech and Baylor will play at the Cotton Bowl. Additionally, SMU hosts Tulsa in a key C-USA matchup, while TCU welcomes Wyoming to Fort Worth and North Texas hosts Arkansas State in Denton.

All of these games happening at the same time just shows the love for college football in the Lone Star State. Along those lines, we have written before how the Big 12 should add TCU and Houston to the league and have an all-Texas division. There are enough fans and recruits in Texas to support those schools, and the rivalry games would make for a better product.
