James Calemine’s “Never Ending Soul Food Tour” includes documented visits to barbecue joints, catfish dens, chicken shacks and any establishment serving memorable vittles. All photos by James Calemine.

Monroe's Smokehouse BBQ served as the location for today's latest Swampland summit meeting. Located off Cassat Avenue, Monroe's Smokehouse is owned by Keith and Kim Waller.

I ordered the rib plate with mashed potatoes covered in gravy and collard greens as side orders. Jim ordered ribs, wings, collards and mac-n-cheese. The ribs tasted fine. The mashed potatoes and gravy were delicious, but my collards were a bit cold. Jim raved about the wings. Monroe's sauces include a sweet brown, a mustard and a vinegar-based  sauce that gave a little kick.

The atmosphere of Monroe's is laid back. It's a spacious place with a lot of interesting photographs--from Patsy Cline to Clint Eastwood--on the walls. They attract a diverse clientele. The guy who took our order, Rick, later came from behind the counter and talked to us for a while. He even let us sample Monroe's special chipotle sauce. He explained how they use dry rubs on the ribs and Monroe's philosophy concerning their signature sauces. Great place all around...three and a half stars out of five. If you're ever in Lynyrd Skynyrd country...eat at Monroe's Smokehouse.
