James Calemine’s “Never Ending Soul Food Tour” includes documented visits to barbecue joints, catfish dens, chicken shacks and any establishment serving memorable vittles. All photos by James Calemine.

Located near the Island pier, Palmer's Village Cafe serves a respectable breakfast and lunch menu. This morning I ordered the Tuscan white omelette with Provelone cheese, marinated white beans, roasted red peppers and sundried tomatoes. Dee selected butternut squash topped with poached eggs over Arugula and served with blueberry compote topped with crispy bacon strips.

Last weekend I enjoyed the Rosemary roasted chicken with Vermont cheddar cheese served over cream spinach. The huevos rancheros are also outstanding. On that day Dee ate pan-seared scallops over BBQ grits with a poached egg and Arugula salad on the side.

Palmer's lunch menu includes slaw 'Dawgs', beef brisket, cheeseburgers, salads, chicken salad, crab cakes and a Reuben sandwich. Sweet or unsweetened tea washes down any plate. Palmer's never fails to deliver a hearty meal. Now, a walk in the sunshine down to Southeast Adventure Outfitters.

Sometimes breakfast is the most important meal of the day...
